At approximately 5:15 p.m. on Thursday, Mississippi Highway Patrol State Troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a vehicle matching a “BOLO” for a murder subject out of North Carolina.

The vehicle was seen traveling north of Poplarville.

The driver led troopers on a pursuit before coming to a stop on I-59 N south of Hattiesburg.
He was identified as 25-year-old Freddy Renteria, who is wanted for attempted first-degree
murder in North Carolina.

Renteria was placed under arrest and charged with felony fleeing. He was transported from the scene to a local hospital with serious injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound sustained after the pursuit.

He is currently awaiting extradition to North Carolina. Due to this being an ongoing investigation, authorities say no further comment will be made at this time.
