Forrest County Clerk Candidate charged with murder after hit-and-run death

Forrest County Circuit Clerk Candidate David Breland

A candidate for Forrest County Circuit Clerk has been charged with first degree murder after a person he allegedly struck with his vehicle has died.

On May 5, the Hattiesburg Police Department arrested and charged David Breland, 27, in a hit-and-run accident from Friday, April 28.

Breland was charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing serious injury or disfigurement.

Police were called on Saturday, April 29 around 6:45 a.m., to a report of a pedestrian that was hit by vehicle around the South 17th Avenue and Camp Street intersection. The vehicle had not yet been identified.

When officers arrived, they found a black male suffering from injuries on the side of the roadway. He was transported to a local hospital by AAA.

Throughout the investigation, it was determined that Breland hit the victim at approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, April 28.

Breland was booked in the Forrest County Jail.

The victim died on Friday, according to the Hattiesburg Patriot news organization.
