Forrest County Sheriff’s Office highlight child abuse arrests

Thanks to evolving technology, investigators are better able to gain detailed evidence to solve cases and hunt down those who would harm a child.

The Forrest County Sheriff’s Department released information Monday on how they’ve been able to arrest some accused child abusers.

A Glendale couple charged last summer in the drowning death of their infant daughter have both pled guilty and will spend time in prison.

On Sunday, July 31, 2022, AAA responded to an infant in distress call on Jim Burch Road. Upon arrival they transported a 5-month-old female to FGH and later airlifted to UMMC in Jackson. The child passed away in the early morning hours of August 2, 2022.

24-year-old Brittney Brady, mother of the three children, was charged with first degree murder in the death of the infant and two counts of felony child neglect. Her sentence is 20 years for the charge of culpable negligence manslaughter. Brady is currently serving her time in the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.

33-year-old Steven Busha of Glendale was originally charged with 3 counts of Felony child neglect. Busha also pled guilty to culpable negligence manslaughter and was sentenced to 20 years.

Back in November 2022, Forrest County Deputies arrested 39-year-old Misty Scarbrough of the Brooklyn Community. Scarbrough was charged with 3 counts of accessory before the fact of sexual battery and 3 counts of contributing to the neglect/ delinquency of a child- all felony charges. She remains in the Forrest County jail under $225,000 bond. Also arrested in connection to that case was 35-year-old Justin Richey. He is also being held in the FCADC under $400,000 bond charged with aggravated stalking, sexual battery, 3 counts of touching a child for lustful purposes.

June 10, 2023, FCSO received a call about a possibly deceased infant in the Carnes Community. Following medical attention and officers on scene, the case was turned over to Sheriff’s Office investigators. July 18th, 21-year-old Kristen Perkins was arrested and charged with 2 counts of felony child neglect, and was later given a $400,000 bond. Her boyfriend, 23-year-old Christian Runnels, was also arrested and charged with 2 counts of felony child neglect. His bond was set at $400,000. Both are currently being held in the Forrest County Adult Detention Center awaiting trial. Other charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
