Update Tuesday, Sept 14: U.S. Marshals have captured Garnett Hughes in Akron, Ohio.
Around the state, police are searching for Garnett Hughes, an inmate who escaped Friday.
The Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office says they received the call that Hughes had escaped while being escorted to a funeral.
Hughes went to the family member’s service in Belzoni this morning before he got away. The Mississippi Department of Corrections said in a release that Hughes is serving a life sentence for simple assault on a police officer, kidnapping, armed robbery, sexual battery, burglary and jail escape. Hughes was last seen wearing a yellow jumpsuit.
Nearby schools were on lockdown as a result.
Hughes was serving his life sentence at the East Mississippi Correctional Facility.
