According to The Associated Press, a Louisiana man died after he jumped from a high rise bridge in Pascagoula, presumably to escape police.

Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd Jr. told the SunHerald that 50-year-old James Thomas Edwards of Morgan City, Louisiana jumped to the ground beneath the bridge instead of the water, causing his death.

Pascagoula Police Chief Matt Chapman told reporters that Edwards was being chased by Jackson County sheriff’s deputies when he entered Pascagoula city limits. A tire on Edwards’ car blew out on the bridge, so he allegedly got out on foot and jumped.

At this point it has not been reported why police were pursuing Edwards.
