A Brookhaven murder suspect is in custody after running from police in McComb for almost three hours.

Police say Rashan Smith of Brookhaven, ran from a traffic stop Tuesday night, leading to a police pursuit. Smith wrecked the vehicle at U.S. Highway 570 and Robert Ayres Road near Southwest Mississippi Community College and fled on foot into woods nearby, a Brookhaven detective told WLBT.

Smith had been wanted for a murder that took place early this month in Brookhaven.

Authorities said the K9s searching for Smith were helped out by the fact he lost his gun and his shoe during the hunt.

The Pike and Lincoln County sheriff’s departments, Brookhaven, McComb, Summit and Southwest Mississippi Community College police, Mississippi Highway Patrol, the Department of Corrections, and dog teams from Tangipahoa Parish in Louisiana were involved in the search.
