An erratic driver who caused a wreck and then was shot on scene is airlifted in Pike County.

Authorities are looking into a Sunday incident in Pike County in which a man apparently caused a multiple-vehicle wreck and then was shot.

A Wednesday release from the Pike County Sheriff’s Department says that around 4:41 p.m. Sunday, police received a call of several vehicles involved in an accident on Highway 98 East near the Bogue Chitto River.

As they responded to the wreck, deputies were informed that there were additional calls saying someone had been shot.

When they arrived on the scene, authorities were able to determine that a 2013 Chevrolet Impala was speeding and swerving in between other cars and then became airborne and collided with some other vehicles. It began to flip and came to a stop off the road.

A driver from one of the other wrecked cars ran to the overturned Impala to render aid, and the driver, Damien Allen, crawled out and began to act erratically. Police say Allen then told the good samaritan he was going to steal his truck, causing a fight.

Allen was shot multiple times during that fight, the sheriff’s department said, and was airlifted to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg where he’s listed in critical condition.

Police say Allen had been accused of taking the Impala without permission earlier that day.
