A log truck trying to avoid hitting a school bus ended up hitting two children in Perry County Tuesday.

According to the Mississippi Highway Patrol and WDAM, both children recieved “mild to moderate” injuries in the accident that happened around 3 p.m. on Highway 29 near New Augusta.

Perry County Sheriff Mitch Nobles said the driver of the truck didn’t see that the school bus was stopped until it was too late to avoid hitting it and tried to swerve around it.

Wesley Turner, the truck driver, was later arrested on charges of aggravated assault (injuring a child entering or exiting a school bus – Nathan’s Law), reckless driving, expired tag and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries. He received a $28,000 bond, which he posted Wednesday.
