According to Byram Police Chief David Errington, a pedestrian was killed after they were hit by a vehicle outside of Newk’s on Siwell Road in Byram (near Walmart) at 8:15 p.m. January 29.

Siwell Road was blocked at the time of the incident.

The pedestrian was identified as 28-year-old Kiki S. Hawkins from Jackson. Chief Errington said she was walking across Siwell Road from Burger King.

Hawkins was tragically struck and killed by Corey L. Laird, from Jackson, who was driving recklessly eastboudn on Siwell Road.

Laird left the scene of the accident but later returned with a family member.

Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham Stewart took the body and officers notified next of kin.

A search warrant for Laird’s blood alcohol content was obtained and lab results are pending.

Corey Laird was taken into custody and transported to the Hinds County Detention Center on the charges of Manslaughter- Culpable Negligence, Leaving the Scene of an Accident Causing Death, and Reckless Driving.

This investigation is ongoing.
