A Monticello building went up in smoke and flames on Sunday, according to Monticello and Lawrence County fire officials.

On Sunday around 4:15 p.m., Monticello and District 3 Fire Departments were dispatched to a structure fire at the old store next to Sonic. Fire units arrived on scene to find heavy fire showing on the back side of the building.

Fire units began taking defensive measures due to the amount of fire. Multiple other departments were requested for additional manpower and equipment.

The Mason’s Lodge and a storage building for the United Methodist Church, which both were adjacent to the building, received some minor damage.

The fire was brought under control and fire units began overhaul.

According to Bernie Reed of Reed’s Metals, the building was one of his investment properties.
