Man in custody after allegedly shooting Lamar County deputy

A man is in custody and a Lamar county deputy is recovering from his injuries after a pursuit turned into a shooting overnight.

Troy Prenell Johnson, 22, of Lamar County, was taken into custody in the 600 block of Burnt Bridge Road just before 1 a.m., according to local authorities.

A Blue Alert was issued Friday when Lamar county deputies were pursuing an auto burglary suspect after responding to a burglary in progress on Nicholas Drive just before 7 p.m.

As deputies continued the pursuit around 9:45 p.m., they were searching for the suspect in the 600 block of Burnt Bridge Road.

The Mississippi Bureau Investigation says it was at that point that the deputy stepped out of his vehicle and was shot by the suspect.

The deputy was taken by ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for his injury. He was released from the hospital just before midnight. MBI says he should make a full recovery.

Johnson was fairly quickly named as a person of interest in the investigation.

Multiple agencies, including Hattiesburg Police, Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Forrest County Sheriff’s Department, Harrison County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol, searched the area.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has been called to handle the shooting portion of the investigation.
