Jones County Sheriff Joe Berlin said Thanksgiving morning that Deputy Joey Davis, who was shot overnight in a domestic incident on Riley Johnson Road, has been released from South Central Regional Medical Center.

Davis suffered gunshot wounds to both upper legs which the sheriff said miraculously missed the femoral artery and femur in each of his legs. He is at home and expected to make a full recovery.

The shooting suspect engaged in a gun battle with JCSD SWAT Team members, deputies, and other law enforcement officers shooting from inside the residence where he was barricaded.

He was struck multiple times by gunfire before surrendering. The suspect was transported by EMSERV Ambulance Service to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel for treatment.

He was later transported by EMServ to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg with apparent serious injuries. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is handling the incident investigation and to confirm the identity of the suspect.

“We thank all of the emergency services agencies who responded for the assistance provided last night,” said Berlin. “We have much to be thankful to God for this Thanksgiving with Deputy Joey Davis on the mend and no other law enforcement or emergency services personnel injured during this intense incident. We are indeed blessed.”
