A post from Star Volunteer Fire Department encapsulated the feelings of the Rankin County Fire Service… again.

In the last month, there have been funeral services for Monterey firefighter Joshua Spann, who died trying to save a woman from what appeared to be an abusive situation at the hands of a man who ended up being his killer, and former Monterey/Langford/Reservoir firefighter Ed Steed, who also worked at Rankin EOC for many years.

This time it is Florence Volunteer Fire Department’s Joey Herrington, a fixture in his department, and someone who was much loved by everyone who knew him.

“There will be lines of Fire Trucks and other emergency response vehicles along Hwy 49 on Tuesday, May the 9th. Joey will be so missed by all who came to know him. Please keep his family, Florence Fire Department, and all those who served beside him in your prayers. Tuesday, we may lay yet another fire brother to rest, but he will watch over us along with all those who came before him. Joey, we love you and we miss you dearly already…”

Joey Thurman Herrington passed away Friday, May 5th, 2023. He was 52 years old. Joey was born in Jackson, MS on May 21, 1970 to the late Lewis Herrington, Sr. and Jean Herrington Huff. Joey was an outdoorsman that enjoyed fishing, hunting and was very meticulous about his lawn and yard work. He loved spending time with his grandson, Landon and was involved in all his extracurricular activities. Joey was a giving person that helped so many people. He was a volunteer fireman for more than 25 years for the city of Florence and previously served in Pearl with their volunteer fire department.
