UPDATES: Rankin County deputies involved in fatal line-of-duty shooting

Rankin County deputies and investigators are on the scene of an officer involved shooting in the Robinhood community that left one man dead.

Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey said Deputies were responding to an overdose call when things quickly got out of hand.

According to Bailey, two deputies were involved in the shooting, one of which had worked for the sheriffs department for two days. He is a seasoned officer, however had just joined the ranks at Rankin County.

According to a release from the sheriffs department, when deputies arrived on scene they found the suspect in his vehicle, which was stuck in the mud. Deputies gave commands to the suspect to get out of the car. When he did, he had two knives, one in each hand.

Deputies gave commands for the suspect to drop the knives as he approached them.

“The suspect continued to approach the deputies who were then forced to use deadly force to protect themselves,” the release stated.

Rankin County Emergency Operations Center has brought their mobile command center to the scene. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrived around 5 PM.
