A mother was arrested in Byram after police and witnesses say she had her 2-year-old child in 20 degree weather wearing nothing but a diaper.

According to Byram Police Department, on January 17 at 10:30 a.m., officers with the Byram Police Department responded to Walmart after dispatch had recieved a call of a 2-year-old male wearing only a diaper. The actual outside temperature that morning was 20 degrees with even colder wind chills, said Police Chief David Errington.

Someone inside Walmart caught part of the incident on TikTok and has received millions of views. The TikTok video by user clat88 shows shoppers confronting the woman about the fact that she is dressed for the weather but her baby is not. The mother appears combative.

Officers made contact with the child’s mother, Kambria G. Darby, in the parking lot. Upon further investigation, officers determined the child was clothed inside the store by other shoppers, but he was still freezing and shaking from the cold temperatures.

Police placed Darby in custody for child neglect and secured the child in a warm police unit. Local EMS were called in to evaluate the child’s condition, and Child Protective Services responded and ultimately released the child to an approved relative.

Darby was processed and jailed at the Hinds County Detention Center on bond conditions ordered by the Hinds County Youth Court.
