Lawrence, Walthall counties investigate string of car burglaries

Therese Apel

Lawrence County authorities are looking for a suspect or suspects in a rash of vehicle burglaries.

According to Sheriff Ryan Everett, deputies responded to a vehicle burglary call in the Jayess area early Tuesday morning. That was the beginning of a string of calls about several more of the same crime.

Everett said most of the cars “were just plundered,” but a few had missing items such as perfume, cologne, and jewelry. Walthall County was also reporting similar crimes, Everett said, though there was a gun and a camera stolen there. Police said it appeared that only unlocked vehicles were targeted.

Investigators are diligently working the case, the sheriff said.

“I strongly encourage everyone to remove all valuables and lock vehicles. If your dog barks, make sure you don’t have an unwelcomed visitor,” Everett said. “If you see or hear anything strange, call us at (601) 587-2961 and report it. Always be diligent and safe.”

If you have any knowledge of these crimes, contact the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department or your local Crime Stoppers.
