Brandon man arrested in string of car burglaries

At around 1:30 AM Wednesday, officers from the Brandon Police Department responded to a report of an auto burglary in progress on Overby Street in Brandon.

After locating other vehicles nearby with doors still ajar, officers were able to make contact with additional victims who confirmed their cars had been broken into as well.

All of the vehicles entered by the suspect were left unlocked overnight.

A witness was able to provide a description of the suspect they saw breaking into a car, and after a brief search officers located the suspect walking down a street nearby. Security camera footage provided by one of the victims helped investigators confirm the identification of the suspect.

The suspect, identified as George Edward Jones, Jr. was found to be in possession of multiple items belonging to the owners of several of the burglarized cars.

Jones also admitted to several prior auto burglaries in the West Sunset Drive area of Brandon as well.

Jones was arrested and charged with six counts of auto burglary.

This is an ongoing investigation, as more victims continue to come forward; additional felony charges are expected to be filed against Jones in the days to come.

Jones was transported to the Rankin County Jail and bond was set at $60,000. Jones is due to appear in Brandon Municipal Court on November 17, 2021 for initial appearance.
