The Rankin County Sheriff’s Department has confirmed a fatal shooting on Highway 25 near Lone Pine Church Road.

Cortland Miekel Phlegm was arrested and charged in the shooting death of William Nicholas Cardin, 40, of Carthage, after witnesses said Cardin was shot in his vehicle by Phlegm in his vehicle.

Rankin County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Paul Holley said an employee of the Attorney General’s Office called and said he was waved down by a group of motorists on Highway 25 northbound.

The motorists told him that one of them had shot at somebody in another car.

The victim’s car was located a short distane away with the victim dead inside.

Rankin County Sheriff’s Office deputies and investigators took Phlegm into custody and transported him to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office. So far the nature of the charges have not yet been released.

The incident is currently under investigation.
