One person is dead, and another is hospitalized after a wreck on Fortification Sunday night.

According to Capitol police, around 7:00 p.m. officers witnessed a Hyundai SUV with no lights on traveling at an excessive rate of speed run a red light at the intersection of Lamar Street and Fortification Street.

Officers initiated blue lights in order to attempt to follow the vehicle and make a traffic stop, but were unable due to the speed at which the driver was traveling.

They lost sight of the Hyundai and turned off their blue lights.

Shortly after this interaction, officers noticed a dust cloud at Fortification Street and Palmyra Street, where they found the wrecked vehicle.

Two people were ejected from the vehicle as a result of the crash. One person received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene.

The other person was transported to a local hospital to be treated for injuries from the crash.

Capitol Police Crime Scene Investigators and the Mississippi Highway Patrol Reconstruction Unit are also on the scene. This is an open and active investigation. We will update as soon as we know more.
