Two people have been arrested after police say they staged a carjacking in Pearl in May.

Kenbrosky Santrell Smith, 38, of Jackson; and Chaquinta Lynell Russell, 41, of Byram are charged in the incident that took place May 27 at the Save-A-Lot parking lot. Around 11 a.m., Pearl Police Department got a call from Jackson Police Department saying that a woman had said that she was carjacked at gunpoint in Pearl

The woman allegedly told police that a man made her drive to Jackson then forced her out of the car and stole it. The woman was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Pearl detectives were told that the situation happened at Save-A-Lot when the woman, who was a manager at the Pearl Dairy Queen, walked to her vehicle and found a man in the back seat with a gun. He allegedly told her to drive and then forced her out in Jackson at the home. She said there were bank deposits in her car when it was stolen.

As investigators kept probing the situation, they found out that the night before the incident someone had stolen the night deposits for Dairy Queen, and that Russell had not reported it to the business or to law enforcement.

On June 8, Madison Police Department pulled the vehicle over, and both Smith and Russell were found inside the car that had been reported stolen. Both of them were taken to Pearl police for questioning. Both denied any knowledge of the incident, and Smith refused to speak with detectives.

Russell is charged with False Report of a Crime To Law Enforcement, Embezzlement, and other charges are pending. Smith was charged with Accessory After the Fact.

Pearl Police say the investigation is ongoing.
