18-year-old arrested after deadly road rage incident in Rankin Co.

A man was arrested after a car was shot into on Highway 25 in Rankin County, killing one person during a road rage incident.

According to Captain Paul Holley with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, 18-year-old Cortland Miekell Phlegm from Ridgeland was arrested and transported to the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim has been identified as 39-year-old William Nicholas Cardin of Carthage.

On July 27, the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office received a call from another officer who worked for the Attorney General’s Office. He said that a group of motorists waved him down while he was driving northbound on Highway 25.

The motorist that he spoke with said that one of them had shot at somebody in another car.

The Sheriff’s Department was able to find the car nearby with the victim dead inside. Phlegm was taken into custody after this. The incident is currently under investigation.
