On Monday morning, the Hinds County Board of Supervisors approved a substantial pay raise for Hinds County deputies that allows the department competitive salaries with other agencies in the area.
According to Sheriff Tyree Jones said prior to today’s move, starting certified officers made between $29,000 and $31,000. After the unanimous vote by Hinds supervisors, starting officers will be paid $40,000 per year, while Sergeants will make $45,000 and Lieutenants will make $53,000.
The motion was made by Supervisor Robert Graham, who mentioned his own background in law enforcement as he discussed the importance of a strong law enforcement presence in Hinds County.
Supervisors also encouraged Jones to expand the department so that they could continue to work inside Jackson as well.
