New Stage Broadway Jr. Camp Brings Sister Act Jr. To The Stage

Elijah Mangum

“Sister Act Jr.” is currently being preformed at New Stage Theatre in Jackson after weeks of preparation and instruction during the local theater’s annual Broadway Jr. camp.

There are two casts preforming over four days. The “Prefect” cast preformed on Thursday and will preform again on Saturday at 2 pm while the “Fabulous” cast will preform Friday at 7 pm and Sunday at 2 pm.

The show is based on the 1992 film “Sister Act” and was previously preformed on the main stage. With this adaptation, comes some changes to the original source material.

“It’s based on the movie that came out in the 1990’s except it is set in the 1970’s,” said New Stage Actress and the camp’s vocal instructor Mandy Kate Myers. “It’s the junior version is the same as the main stage versions, but they are shorter. They may have a song or two cut out or shortened scenes. It’s shorter show, but it’s the same story being told.”

Kayliegh Summers of Brandon plays the lead role of Deloris in the “Prefect” cast. In previous camps, Summers played Young Eve in “Children of Eden Jr.” in 2022 and Gretchen Wieners in “Mean Girls Jr.” last year. After those years of experience, she is excited to step into the habit of Whoopi Goldberg while also adding aspects of herself to make the role her own.

“I’ve learned alot about how to embrace her character and become a good Deloris,” Summers said. “I’ve been trying learn how to interpet the way she played the role. It’s really has been a great experience.”

In addition to auditions and rehearsals, campers received regular instruction in acting, singing, dancing as well as masterclasses over the last month.

“It’s been a blast!,” Myers said. “It’s been exciting time to be able to put this show together and tell this story. I’m honored to work with the New Stage staff and Education Department here. We build these relationships with the kids that come and it is just wonderful. I’m blessed to be a part of it.”
