On Saturday, May 4, at approximately 9:14 pm, Ridgeland Police officers were dispatched to Ridgeland Place Apartments, 879 William Boulevard, in reference to a domestic dispute.
When officers attempted to make contact with the people inside and were fired upon.
Officers returned fire, shooting the suspect and a stand-off ensued with the occupants barricaded in an apartment.
28-year-old Keithannia Cortez Starks, of Canton, surrendered and was taken into custody after the stand-off. Starks was bleeding from the chest upon surrender and was transported to UMMC for medical attention. He is in stable condition, but the extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.
No officers were injured in this incident.
The female party, who will not be identified, is safe.
Starks remains hospitalized but faces charges of Domestic Violence-Aggravated Assault and Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer.
Ridgeland Police Department’s Special Response Team, Madison County Sheriff’s Department’s SWAT Team, Madison Police Department, and Madison County Sheriff’s Department personnel also assisted on the perimeter.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation responded and processed the scene and will be investigating this incident.
MBI said the officers involved were not seriously injured.
