One person is dead and an officer is injured after a chase with a shoplifting suspect in McComb Wednesday, according to the Enterprise-Journal.

Steven Butler is in custody after a chase that had several phases and ended in the death of another motorist.

The E-J reports that authorities were told that Butler was shoplifting and located his vehicle. They chased him through Burglund, then lost sight of his car. Chief Juan Cloy said the vehicle was later found behind a house on Lynn Street, and officers tried to block him from escaping.

Butler reportedly ran from police on foot, but got back to his car and took off again, hitting a car that was on blocks being repaired. A McComb officer was hit by that vehicle, which injured his leg. The chase went on down Broadway until police lost Butler again.

The E-J reports that about police were informed about 30 minutes later that Butler had been in a crash on Highway 24 in Amite County, and that the other motorist had died in the crash.

Butler’s injuries are not life-threatening.

The victim’s name has not yet been released. Cloy says Butler will face numerous charges in the incident.
