According to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, the search for Ebony Owens is over.

The body of the Hinds County mother of two was found in the Big Black River, downstream from where police have information she was thrown into the river. Jones said the level of the water had gone down a good bit and that helped with the search.

Owens was reported missing on Wednesday, March 15. Her car was found burned, and police began looking for her husband shortly afterwards, saying he wasn’t yet a suspect, but that he was wanted for questioning. Evidence in the vehicle showed that it was likely she had been gravely injured, police said.

The search took to the water after police arrested her husband, Michael Owens, who was charged with multiple counts. Agencies including the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Operations Center, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Operations Center, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, and the Rankin County Emergency Operations Center searched the Big Black River downstream from the bridge police were told Owens was thrown from.

The Big Black is known for being full of debris and hard to navigate, but experts trained in sonar were called in to comb the water, and a drone was put in the air.

On Saturday, Jones announced that an unidentified body had been found, and shortly thereafter he identified her as Owens.

Michael Owens is charged in Ebony Owens’ murder. He was also charged after the fact with Sexual Battery of a Minor and two additional charges of Sexual Assault of a minor. So far the Sheriff has not elaborated on those charges.

This case is still under investigation.
