Dashboard-Mounted Cellphone Deflects Bullet, Saving Driver In Lowndes County

On Sunday, March 3, at approximately 10:39 PM, Deputies were dispatched to Baptist Memorial Hospital in reference to a gunshot victim.
Deputies spoke with a witness who stated the victim had gotten off work around 10:00 PM and drove down Casey Lane in Lowndes County.
He was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Casey Lane and Yorkville Road East when a white 4-door sedan came to a stop on Yorkville Road in front of him.
Someone from the car started shooting at the victim. Multiple shots were fired from the passenger window of the white car, striking the front windshield of the victim’s car.
A bullet entered the front windshield and went through the victim’s cellphone which was mounted on the dash at the time. Shrapnel from the phone hit the victim in the face causing several scratches and an unknown foreign object to be lodged in his face below his right eye.
The victim drove himself home and then had his cousin drive him to the hospital in the victim’s car.
The vehicle was inspected by detectives at the hospital and found to have several bullet holes in it.
Deputies went to the scene of the incident where glass from the victim’s vehicle and a .223 shell casing was found.
Detectives are working to find additional witnesses and evidence related to this shooting.
