Columbus Shooting Suspect Arrested in Starkville

A shooting that occurred Wednesday in East Columbus resulted in a twenty-four-hour manhunt that ended with the arrest of Cameron Jones (17).

In a joint operation, Starkville Police Department and the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office began clearing and searching areas in the northern sections of town.

SWAT personnel were deployed after Jones was suspected in being in a vacant apartment. The suspect barricaded himself and chemical agents were deployed. Jones was arrested without injury. At the time, Jones was listed as armed and dangerous.

Jones has the following active charges or warrants that will be served:
• Aggravated Assault (Columbus Police Department)
• Shooting into an occupied dwelling (Columbus Police Department)
• Auto Burglary (Starkville Police Department)
• Auto Burglary (Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office)
• Auto Burglary (Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office)
• Auto Burglary (Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office)
• Felony taking of a motor vehicle (Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office)

At the time of arrest, Jones was out on circuit court bond for the following charges:
• Domestic Violence – Aggravated Assault
• Aggravated Assault
• Aggravated Assault
• Aggravated Assault
• Aggravated Assault

“This agency simply could not rise to this occasion and end it with a successful conclusion without the tremendous support from the community and the teamwork of local law enforcement agencies,” said Starkville Police Chief Mark Ballard. “I am relieved that no one else was hurt.”

“The Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office is happy to assist with bringing this incident to a safe conclusion,” said Oktibbeha Sheriff Steve Gladney. “Jones is suspected in recent cases that have occurred in Oktibbeha County.”

Law enforcement officers from the Starkville Police Department, Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office, Winston County Sheriff’s Office, Mississippi State University Police Department and members of the MSU Raspet Flight Research Laboratory UAS Team worked as a team to ensure the safety of the community.
