Columbia police, state agencies investigate child death

A child was pronounced dead at the hospital and a woman has been arrested in the death, Columbia police said Wednesday in a release.

According to authorities, on Tuesday around 7 p.m., officers were called to the Marion General Hospital in regards to an unresponsive child that had been taken to the emergency room by his parents.

When police got there, the child had died. An investigation was launched, and according to Columbia police, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, and the District Attorney’s office found cause to arrest Janell Lewis, 30, who is now charged with felony neglect of a child.

Lewis is being held at the Marion County Correctional Facility awaiting a bond hearing. The case continues to be under investigation.
