STONE COUNTY — A suspect was taken into custody Sunday after allegedly fleeing from a Stone County campground in a stolen vehicle and leading law enforcement on a pursuit that ended in a crash, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
The incident began around 11:34 a.m. Sunday when MHP assisted the Stone County Sheriff’s Office following an incident at Lake-A-Way Campgrounds on Highway 26 east of Wiggins.
Authorities said the suspect fled the campground in a stolen vehicle before a trooper located it traveling south on U.S. Highway 49 near Wiggins.
A pursuit followed involving multiple troopers, as well as deputies with the Stone County and Harrison County sheriff’s offices.
During the chase, investigators said the suspect drove the wrong way on U.S. Highway 49 and struck multiple law enforcement vehicles before leaving the roadway and crashing into a ditch.
The suspect was taken into custody without further incident with assistance from deputies from the Harrison County and Stone County sheriff’s offices.
He was transported to Stone County, where he is being held.
No troopers or sheriff’s deputies were injured during the incident.
Authorities said the suspect is expected to face multiple charges.
The Stone County Sheriff’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation into the original incident at the campground.
