HOLLANDALE — A 17-year-old Simmons High School student was fatally shot Saturday night in Hollandale, leaving his family grieving and seeking help with funeral expenses.
Jadarius Jenkins, who is an identical twin, was shot near Roosevelt Street shortly before 11 p.m. Saturday, according to Delta News.
Hollandale Police Chief Johnny Spand told reporters that officers responded to a report of shots fired and found Jenkins suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Jenkins was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
Spand told Delta News that several people are considered persons of interest in the case. The investigation remains ongoing.
The Simmons High School community also is mourning Jenkins’ death.
“Our hearts are heavy as we grieve the loss of Jadarius, a remarkable young man who touched the lives of so many in our school and community,” Superintendent Rosalyn Brockman said in a social media post. “His spirit, kindness, and presence made a lasting impact, and he will be deeply missed.”
Jenkins’ family has launched a fundraiser to help cover funeral expenses.
According to the GoFundMe, Jenkins’ twin and his other siblings are grieving his death while the family works to make funeral arrangements.
“The pain of this loss is especially heavy as his identical twin grieves the loss of a brother they shared life with so closely,” the fundraiser states.
The family said funeral services will take place after the investigation is completed. Donations will go toward funeral costs and other expenses associated with laying Jenkins to rest.
More than $5,600 had been raised as of the information provided for this story.
Those who wish to support the family can contribute through the Jadarius Jenkins funeral fundraiser.
