A Meridian man, Kadarius L. Lockheart, was shot once by a deputy following a chase on Highway 35 in Forest.

On Friday, Scott County deputies were conducting a safety checkpoint on Highway 35 in Forest. At 1:45 am, a black 2011 Honda Accord passed through the checkpoint where a deputy saw what appeared to be narcotics in the center cup holder.

Upon being questioned about the narcotics, Lockhart fled the scene in his car. Authorities say another deputy was able to pursue him.

Investigators say the vehicle then stopped in the roadway. The passenger exited with his hands raised and Lockheart exited the driver’s side with a 9mm pistol.

The deputy then shot Lockheart once. He was transported to UMC by ambulance, where he is being treated. The deputies involved were not harmed.

The investigation has been turned over to MBI and the Scott County District Attorney’s Office.

Lockheart is being charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of narcotics and misdemeanor traffic charges.
