A woman at a sporting event in Madison accidentally fired a shot from a gun inside her purse Monday, officials said.

Police say an investigator notified dispatch of an accidental discharge of a firearm at a sporting event at Rosa Scott School Monday. A release from Madison Police Department says Kashaun Alexsis McRunells of Edwards told investigators that she was reaching into her purse as her phone was ringing and accidentally fired her gun. The investigator was able to secure the purse and the weapon and determine that no citizens were injured.

School administrators were on scene and suspended the remainder of the game as investigators escorted McRunnells to a secure office inside the school. All spectators peacefully exited the gymnasium as investigators continued interviewing witnesses and notifying appropriate personnel.

While it was determined that McRunells has an Enhanced Concealed Carry Permit that allowed her to have the gun at the event, she was charged with discharging the firearm within the city limits of Madison, in violation of the city of Madison’s ordinance. McRunnells was given a $500 bond and she was provided a court date to appear before Madison Municipal Court regarding the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
