A body found in a field in Panola County is the subject of a death investigation as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the Panolian.

Police said the body was found in a field off Aldridge Road just east of the I-55 exit at Pope.

So far Sheriff Shane Phelps has not released a lot of information, including the gender of the remains, the Panolian reports.

The body was found around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday morning when the sheriff followed up on an abandoned vehicle that had been reported over the weekend. A deputy had reportedly noted the car in the same place on Friday and on Saturday, so he called in a wrecker.

Phelps told the Panolian that the wrecker service and deputies noticed phones and other mobile devices inside the vehicle and felt like that was strange. After attempting to find the owner using the registration and tag information, the sheriff had returned to the location to investigate on Tuesday.
