A woman is dead after an officer-involved shooting near the Raymond Detention Center, according to Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones.
Jones posted on his Twitter page that at least three deputies encountered the armed female, and she fired shots and deputies returned fire. She is now deceased.
Jones said there’s no known identity yet for the woman, but that she told deputies at the gate that she was going to the jail to pick someone up.
Once she was inside the facility, Jones said she pulled the gun after she left the work center and she was approaching the detention center on foot. That’s when she shot at officers, who returned fire.
“Both RDC and the Work Center along with all detainees are secure. Neither facility was compromised and the shooting occurred on County Farm Rd,” Jones posted.
Once the woman is identified and authorities have notified the next of kin, Jones said her identity will be released.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation, which is routine for officer-involved shootings at most agencies in the state.
Update: the shooting at RDC involved at least three deputies and an unidentified female. The female is deceased. Both RDC and the Work Center along with all detainees are secure. Neither facility was compromised and the shooting occurred on County Farm Rd.
