Two children are dead in Coahoma County after being shot, and authorities are trying to determine why he would do that.

A release from the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Department says that deputies got a call of a child shot at the Coldwater River Road Apartments in Jonestown. An off-duty deputy that lived in the area responded to the scene immediately where he and other deputies found Marquez Griffin, 25, of Arlington, Texas, was holding a child at gunpoint.

Deputies were able to talk to Griffin, who eventually surrendered his weapon, and the child was helped to safety. But once Griffin was taken into custody, deputies found that two other children had been shot. One was a 9-year-old male and the other was a 1-year-old female.

One of them was pronounced dead on the scene and the other was taken to the emergency room in Clarksdale before dying of wounds inflicted by the gunshot. The names of the children are not being released yet, the Sheriff’s Department reports.

Griffin had recently moved back to the area from Texas. He was arrested and taken to the Coahoma County Adult Detention Center. He is charged with two counts of murder and two counts of aggravated assault.

This is an ongoing investigation.
