The Prentiss County Sheriff’s Department has arrested two men in connection with an alleged conspiracy to defraud a local business, SMC.

29-year-old Christopher Gene Wells, of Booneville, an employee of SMC, and 64-year-old Clifton Benard Byrd, of Baldwyn, were both charged with conspiracy to commit a crime after SMC reported that the weight of materials brought by a customer had been altered to show a larger amount than what was delivered.

Warrants were issued following affidavits, and both suspects had their bonds set at $5,000 by Justice Court Judge Craig Bishop. Investigator Torie Jumper is leading the case, which will be presented to the next Prentiss County Grand Jury.

The investigation involved multiple officers, including Investigator Jason Chism, Investigator Aaron Stolz, Deputies Jimmy Jarman and Ethan Hester, and assistance from the Baldwyn Police Department.
