On Saturday, December 31, 2022, at approximately 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a call at 572 E. Beasley Road.

While at the location, officers took an individual into custody who experienced a medical emergency.

American Medical Response was called to the location to help, but the individual was pronounced deceased on the scene.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) is independently investigating this incident and the Jackson Police Department (JPD) has opened an internal investigation.

Officers Avery Willis, Kenya McCarty, and James Land were placed on administrative leave with pay pending the outcome of an Internal Affairs investigation.

The Jackson Police Department made a statement saying,

“The Jackson Police Department is committed to community-oriented policing and providing relevant information to the public, however, until both internal and external investigations conclude, the Department will make no further comments.”
