Recently, a senior Chihuahua mix named Trixie was brought to Mississippi Animal Rescue League for emergency housing when her dad, a veteran, had to be hospitalized at the Veterans Hospital (VA) in Jackson.

Trixie is his world, and the kind staff at the VA understood just how important it was for Trixie to be safe and cared for so her dad could get the help he needed.

On Saturday afternoon, after MARL had closed for the day, they received an urgent call through our answering service. Trixie’s dad was being discharged from the hospital, but there was one problem: he refused to leave without his beloved Trixie.

He made it clear to the staff that he would wait until he could be reunited with her. Despite having no transportation to our shelter, his ride to take him home agreed to pick him up once he figured out how to get Trixie.

That’s when Lt. Ricky Davis with the VA Police Department, stepped in. Lt. Davis arrived at MARL, picked up Trixie, and brought her back to the VA Hospital to reunite her with her dad. The joy and relief were evident on everyone’s faces.

MARL said this sweet reunion was made possible by Lt. Ricky Davis’s kindness and willingness to go above and beyond for this veteran.
