The Pearl City of Commerce shared an incredible story of bravery by the local fire department that resulted in saving a long-time Pearl resident’s life.
The Pearl Fire Department “A Shift” at Station One was recognized today as Crew of the Month after what they did to help save a man’s life back in December.
On December 29th, a man was at Revell Hardware in Pearl buying building materials when he began to feel bad and started sweating profusely.
Dunaway Rooks, the owner of Revell Hardware, encouraged the man to go to the fire department nearby and have them check his vitals.
The man drove to Central Fire Station and A Shift firefighters had just returned from a call. They immediately began checking the man’s vitals and after the results of the EKG, the crew informed the man that he had signs of having a heart attack. They said he needed transported to the hospital as soon as possible.
The man suddenly lost consciousness and Pearl firefighters revived him with their on-site medical equipment.
Firefighters contacted Pafford Ambulance Service and informed them of the situation and urgency. The firefighters then established IV access and administered medication before Pafford’s arrival.
The patient was taken to St. Dominic’s Hospital and was immediately transported to the Cath Lab for emergency surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery, thanks to the quick actions of these firefighters and the owner at Revell Hardware.
The Pearl Chamber of Commerce said,
“We are thankful that this experienced crew had just arrived back from a call and was able to save the life of former long-time Pearl resident Tony Exum. Tony was very emotional as he explained to us how lucky and very blessed that he is to be alive based on the prognosis given to him at the hospital. We want to thank God for putting all the pieces of the puzzle together to help PFD be a part of saving his life. We also want to thank Tony for coming to the presentation ceremony and expressing his sincere gratitude for the actions of this outstanding crew.”
Pearl Fire Chief Todd Burkes presented each of the 5 crew members with a certificate of appreciation and praised the skill and dedication that saved this gentleman’s life. Mayor Jake Windham thanked them for their life-saving measures and their constant devotion to serving our citizens.
Pearl Fire Department Station One “A Shift” consists of Captain Preston Harris, Lt. Jimmy Marciel, Lt. Adam Rawls, Firefighter Dewayne Rice and Firefighter Justin Graves. “A Shift” Battalion Chief is Allen Elliot.
