Cheshire Abbey, a local animal rescue organization in Jackson, was called to a disturbing scene Wednesday afternoon.

Rescuers, along with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, went to a home in Jackson where a dog was seen lying down with every rib showing, on the end of a heavy chain in 100-degree heat.

The dog had no water and was in terrible condition. Rescuers noticed that his ears appeared to have been chopped in an “at-home” way to give them the cropped appearance.

When Chrissy, with Cheshire Abbey, arrived, the dog was hiding and appeared to be terrified of humans.

After some negotiation, the dog’s owners agreed to surrender him to the rescuers. “Thank goodness they surrendered him,” said Chrissy from Cheshire Abbey. “We couldn’t leave this baby out there.”

The dog was immediately taken to Canton Road Veterinary Hospital for treatment. Cheshire Abbey is now asking the community for help to pay for this dog’s vet care. Cheshire Abbey already has numerous vet bills for other dogs they are helping.

The dog had no fever when the vet checked, and appeared to be starved. The vet thinks he is around 5 or 6 years old.

Cheshire said,

“We are incredibly grateful for the support from Hinds County Sheriff’s Office and the Madison city officials who helped us connect. This dog’s rescue was truly a team effort,” Cheshire Abbey stated. “Any help is greatly appreciated!”

Updates on the dog’s condition will be provided as they become available.
