Tuesday, the South Jones Volunteer Fire Department responded to a single-vehicle collision at about 4:30 p.m. near 200 Old Progress Road.

When first responders arrived, they found the vehicle resting against a tree, after it left the roadway and struck the tree, causing severe damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle.

According to Public Information Officer Dana Bumgardner, the driver and only person in the vehicle died as a result of the collision. Firefighters had to use extrication equipment to free the driver from the wreckage.

Jones County Sheriff’s Office, Emserv Ambulance Service, and the Jones County coroner’s office were also on the scene.
