A 2018 video from the scene when Cpl. Michael Tarrio took fire from two suspects and miraculously came out unharmed.

A veteran Jackson Police officer died off duty in a motorcycle wreck Thursday.

Cpl. Michael Tarrio, who worked in Precinct 3, was headed west on U.S. 80 when there was a collision with a pickup truck.

Police said the other driver did stay on the scene.

On May 9, 2018, Tarrio was involved in a shootout at the Valero on Cooper Road when two brothers opened fire on him. The suspects ended up wounding themselves, one of them fatally. It was widely considered by all who viewed the security tape almost miraculous that Tarrio walked away from that situation.

Jackson Police Department Chief James Davis, addressing some members of the media, said it’s just a sad day for JPD.

There was an outpouring of grief starting to flood social media on Thursday afternoon as the news got around.
