HATTIESBURG — Sections of Interstate 22 and Interstate 55 in north Mississippi that were previously closed because of winter weather are now open, but transportation officials are still urging drivers to avoid travel unless it is absolutely necessary.

All previously closed lanes of I-22/U.S. 78 from Red Banks (Exit 21) to the Tennessee state line reopened Friday morning, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation. The previously closed section of I-55 north of Como (Exit 257) also reopened.

MDOT said icy conditions, debris and work crews remain in the area, and travel is not advised on either route unless absolutely necessary.

Officials also reported ongoing concerns about ice on roads and bridges in 21 Mississippi counties: Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Lafayette, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Prentiss, Quitman, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Washington and Yalobusha.

Drivers can monitor conditions using the MDOT Traffic App or the MDOTtraffic.com website.
