Mississippi inmates have successfully harvested over 143,000 pounds of produce this summer, contributing fresh vegetables like broccoli, okra, corn, and peas to their meal trays.
The program, aimed at teaching inmates horticulture skills, took place at various correctional facilities across the state, including the Mississippi State Penitentiary, Marshall County Correctional Facility, and Central Mississippi Correctional Facility.
The Mississippi State Penitentiary led the effort, producing 118,140 pounds of produce, while the South Mississippi Correctional Institution harvested over 24,000 pounds of blueberries.
Inmates plan to continue their agricultural projects with fall and winter crops.
MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain emphasized that the program prepares inmates for life after release by equipping them with practical skills for gardening and healthy living.
Inmate Will Washington, set for release this year, expressed gratitude for the program, saying it inspired him to pursue a landscaping business.
