An adult male in custody awaiting trial died at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center.

According to Sheriff Eddie Hawkins, the man was found unresponsive in his cell shortly after 7:00 a.m. on Monday.

The inmate had been medically cleared for incarceration and had been in custody for 56 days. He was found unresponsive during feeding time at approximately 7:17 a.m.

Detention staff from the Adult Detention Center attempted life-saving measures, including the use of CPR until Columbus Fire Department personnel and EMT’s arrived at the scene and pronounced the man dead.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will complete an investigation following internal procedures and state laws.

The Lowndes County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death and release the man’s identity after his family has been notified.
