Madison police investigate shooting between roommates

The Madison Police Department is investigating a shooting between roomates that happened Sunday night.

According to a release, just before 8 p.m. Sunday police got a call that a person had been shot in the Tidewater Subdivision in Madison.

Officers found a 56-year-old man in the area near the residence who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and began medical aid as paramedics were enroute. Police also began an investigation inside the home where the shooting took place and detained the injured man’s roommate.

Police determined that the roommates got in to a physical altercation outside their apartment and then continued once inside the house. As the fight progressed, one man got his .357 caliber revolver and shot his roommate multiple times. The injured man then ran out of the house. A gun was recovered from the scene along with possible illegal drugs.

The male gunshot victim was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center by Pafford Ambulance Service where he is listed as stable.

The suspect, identified as George Pickett, Jr., 56, of Madison, was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries received during the initial fight. Upon his treatment and release he was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Weapon, Possession of Marijuana and Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Pickett is housed at the Madison County Detention Center awaiting his initial appearance in Madison Municipal Court.
