The Jones County Sheriff’s Department responded overnight on Wednesday to a report of an adult male shot on Springhill Road near the intersection of Highway 28.

Deputies arrived to find an adult male shot once in the lower abdomen with a .22 caliber long rifle round. The victim was transported by EMServ to Forrest General Hospital for treatment.

JCSD Investigator Patrick Oster is the lead investigator in the case.

Sheriff Joe Berlin notes, “We are unsure at this time if this shooting was accidental in nature or the result of a nefarious act on the part of someone else. Investigator Patrick Oster will be interviewing the wounded individual, identified as Preston Craney, as soon as he is medically cleared.”
