Jones County Resident Escapes Out Of Window After Home Catches Fire

Morgan Howard

A Jones County resident escaped out the window of their home as it went up in flames on Sunday night.
According to PIO Dana Bumgardner, shortly before 10:00 pm tonight, Shady Grove and Sharon volunteer fire departments responded to a structure fire at 5146 Highway 15 North in Laurel.  On arrival of the first fire personnel at the scene, firefighters found a wood and brick single-story home with flames emanating from the rear of the home.
Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, but not before the home sustained significant fire damage to about half the home and the back porch area, as well as a storage building behind the home.
One resident was home at the time of the incident, having been in a back bedroom, and said there were popping sounds and the power began flickering.  As the resident tried to escape the home, it became clear that the fastest and safest exit was through a window.
Emserv Ambulance Service treated one individual with minor injuries.  The individual declined transport to the hospital by the ambulance service.  JCSO was also on scene.  Highway 15 southbound was shut down for a time, while firefighters worked the structure fire.
