Jackson Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early this morning at America’s Best Inn at 2450 Highway 80.

According to a release sent by Jackson Police Department spokesman Sam Brown, a man slashed his child’s mother’s tires and broke the windows in her vehicle. Police say the woman’s boyfriend had been sitting inside a Dodge Challenger nearby with another person and got out and fired six shots from a .380 caliber pistol.

The child’s father was struck one time in the chest and died of his injuries.

The woman was taken to police headquarters to be questioned, and her boyfriend left the scene before officers showed up.

The identity of the 42-year-old victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
